Merry Mearns

Fourth-generation family home builders, Mactaggart & Mickel presents Merry Mearns on Sunday 28 November, the Christmas extravaganza set to take over Newton Mearns. The inaugural event will make the festive season one to remember for all visiting the town and includes the chance to see the skies above Fairweather Park lit up with a fantastic festive firework finale.

The event will also feature a Christmas market on the event space at the Ayr Road entrance to the Avenue Shopping Centre, with live entertainment and funfair rides. There will also be a chance to visit Santa and, if you’re on the nice list, you might even receive a gift!

Joanne Casey, Director at Mactaggart & Mickel, said: “We are thrilled to be able to support such an exciting initiative. This is the first large scale Christmas event in Newton Mearns and is a wonderful opportunity for local businesses, organisations and residents to come together to enjoy some festive cheer.

“Mactaggart & Mickel have a proud history of supporting people in the communities where we are building new homes, reflecting our family ethos. We’ve had a presence in Newton Mearns for many years and care deeply about playing our part in making a positive difference, which we are sure Merry Mearns will do.”

Local community group, My Mearns, who are responsible for the event hope this is just the start of large-scale community activity in the town. Spokesperson for the group, Saira Kareem, said:

“It’s incredibly exciting to bring events like this to our town. Newton Mearns has always looked on whilst events like this happen in Glasgow, Paisley, Clarkston and Barrhead – so we can’t wait to have something like this we can call our own.

“We’re incredibly proud to live here and want to do everything we can to shout about how great a place ‘the Mearns’ is to shop, visit and live!”

Mactaggart & Mickel presents Merry Mearns begins at 12noon on Sunday 28 November with the Christmas market, live entertainment and Santa’s Grotto staying open until 5pm on the grounds of The Avenue Shopping Centre. The fireworks finale will blast off from Fairweather Park at approximately 5:30pm, with viewing recommended from the park itself. There will be a limited amount of specially reserved accessible viewing spaces available in the Avenue car park.

Michelle McCabe, Centre Manager at the Avenue said: “The Avenue is an integral part of the community here in Newton Mearns, so to play our part in hosting the first Christmas event is an honour – especially after such a tough 18-months. We can’t wait to kick off the festive celebrations with what is gearing up to be a really positive event for the town.”
